Everyone else takes August off. I take it seriously

Everyone else takes August off. I take it seriously, in an apartment that hasn’t seen a beach towel in three years.

Everyone I know is on a beach right now. I’m at my desk. I’ve made peace with it.

Summer here is quiet. Dead inbox. Fewer meetings. More room to think.

I use half of it to work. The other half I use to sleep like it’s a competitive sport.

Three years running, same pattern. No sun. No sand. No romance of summer. Just a desk that’s seen this before.

Fall shows up. Everyone comes back tanned, jet-lagged and staring down 400 unread emails.

I come back from nowhere: to an inbox that’s already handled and work that’s already done.

I’ll travel when the heat breaks. The sea isn’t going anywhere.

Neither are the numbers. They’ll just be bigger when I get back.
