My 2014 London job search: six months, two interviews, one unpaid internship. Days before I was due to start, I was heading back to my childhood bedroom.
After my MA, I applied for every junior role I could find in fashion, culture and arts media. 99% of the replies were automatic rejection emails.
Then I got an internship at an independent fashion magazine.
A few days before I was due to start, the editor canceled it. The internship was unpaid. I’d offered to work for free and still didn’t qualify.
So I packed my life into 10 cardboard boxes and moved back to my childhood bedroom in Slovenia.
The thought running through my head was: “I disappointed everyone who believed I’d become someone.”
My failure came with a nepo baby parachute. My father gave me a job editing our lifestyle and tech sites.
A few months later, a post I wrote about beer being healthy got a few thousand views.
My first viral post.
Oh.
Maybe I could make people read things on the internet.
Fast-forward to today:
– I went from “beer is healthy” clickbait to SEO, social media, video and conversion copy inside an 8-figure e-commerce business.
– My content has reached almost everyone in my country.
– I know how to turn ideas, audience data and business goals into one strategy.
So yes, my marketing career was Plan B. But it became where I built the skills, instincts and proof I didn’t have when I left London.
